Receive timely, convenient bereavement care and support exactly when you need it, no waiting for paper mailings or dealing with app downloads.
“The feedback we've received from these text messages has been incredible. At first, even some of our own staff were hesitant about transitioning to text communication. But now, with everything at our fingertips, we can easily navigate resources and see direct responses. It's eye-opening to realize that we can receive such detailed feedback—people are sharing their experiences with hospice care and thanking specific team members like nurses, chaplains, and social workers. This instant feedback helps us improve our services and provide more personalized care, whether it's enhancing bereavement support or just receiving a simple 'thank you.' It's been truly mind-blowing to see the impact these responses have on our ability to improve care.”

Understanding Bereavement Care
What is Bereavement Care?
Bereavement care is designed to assist you in recognizing your strengths, navigating difficulties, managing stressors, and developing coping skills essential for adapting to a significant loss in your life.
While many individuals use the terms grief and bereavement interchangeably, they carry distinct meanings. Grief is a natural response to loss, while bereavement specifically refers to the period following a loss during which you undergo the experience of grief. Understanding this distinction is crucial, as loss is an inevitable part of life, and everyone will encounter grief in response to various losses. This is where the value of bereavement care becomes evident.
What does Bereavement Care entail?
A well-designed bereavement care program helps you understand and cope with grief, offering support through emotional, physical, social, and spiritual reactions. These may include feelings of anger, guilt, anxiety, sadness, or physical symptoms like sleep issues and illness. Each person’s response to loss is unique.
Trained professionals can assess your coping methods, provide education, and introduce effective strategies to navigate grief, leaving you feeling supported and empowered. For those experiencing complicated grief, a bereavement care professional can recommend additional support.
How to find Bereavement Care
Locating bereavement care services is often possible through community hospice programs, which are valuable resources within local communities. While hospice programs primarily focus on patients and their families, they frequently extend support to individuals in the broader community who may not have directly received hospice care services. If a hospice's bereavement program cannot fulfill your specific needs, they can often guide you toward other community resources.
Bereavement Care Under Hospice
When a loved one passes away in hospice, the Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation (CoPs) require agencies to provide bereavement services for at least 13 months following the patient’s death. These services often include grief counseling and support to help families navigate their loss. The CoPs also mandate that agencies assess and document the family’s needs during this period to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Traditionally, bereavement support involved mailings such as letters or postcards with information and resources. Today, some agencies are enhancing these efforts with modern approaches like nanaBEREAVEMENT text messages, offering families a more personalized and accessible form of bereavement/grief support.
